We do things for a reason, which is the reason for us living in this world. If nothing was done for a reason then we would have no reason to do it. I made a save at work today – the first ever save in MY lifeguarding career. Of course, something felt weird when “panic” mode sets in and the adrenaline starts; but, after the save, it is refreshing to know that YOU trained hard to respond to things YOU are suppose to respond to. Job is being done. Situation was … the rant starts now … that a father knew the rules of the waterfront, but failed to abide to them.
For people who never been to the facility, the rule is simple: swimming to the deep end is permitted if the swimmer can swim ON HIS/HER OWN with no assistance. The father decides to swim both his little girl and the older sister across the water to the dock. Big no. However, the lifeguard who was in the chair did not catch it since it was in her “blind spot.” After that, the father decided to leave the kids on the dock. Then, he swam to his wife at shore. When I entered the chair to guard, he came to me and asked me if his daughters could swim to the dock even though both could not swim. I thought this clown was kidding- not at the fact that he had no common sense, but the fact that he had managed to get those two non-swimmers to the dock and no one stopped him from doing so. Man I was confused for a second …
I told him that was not permitted, and I would have to go get them. So I did. The girls were not scared but were nervous. So I did what I was trained to do. After I got them back, I got no thanks from the pinhead of that father. I did not need that, however, because I got satisfaction in the knowing that I am doing what I was hired to do, and that I was walking with a purpose-that purpose was to get those two girls to safety.
Bottom line- everything YOU do, must be done with a purpose, or else nothing can happen. Today, my purpose was to do my job and let people know that lifeguarding is not about sitting in the blistering heat under an umbrella, doing nothing but getting a tan, and picking up girls. Rather, it is about making sure people are safe. Whatever YOU do, have motivation, thought or purpose behind it. That is how I walk with a purpose each day – especially today.
